Why did you decide to pursue an Executive MBA?
Throughout my career before EMBA program I was working in function of strategy, marketing and new business development. However, because my previous studies focus on engineering and science, I felt that I lack some business and finance knowledge. In order to advance my career, I believed I needed a holistic education in business administration. The other reason that I pursued an EMBA is because I wanted to expand my networks and to explore the possibility to work in other regions.
What lead you to the HEC Paris EMBA, and how did you know this school and this program was the right fit for you?
I chose to apply for HEC Paris EMBA, because it is located in Europe which is my favorite place to study, work and live. The program is ranked very highly in many global EMBA ranking tables, particularly in terms of international diversity.
How did you customize your learning experience?
Because I have been very interested in Finance and also in my work I need knowledge of corporate finance, I chose to do my specialization in Finance. The specialization courses turned out to be very interesting and useful for me in career and in private life.
I also took advantage of the program’s Mobility option and joined a different EMBA cohort for the Marketing course. This allowed me to stay on job when my company needed me to and gave me the chance to meet and build a network with the other participants.
How did you balance the demands of work, family, and the program while studying?
It really took a lot of effort to work, study and fulfill my family duties. I think it is very important to communicate and discuss time arrangements with family and your company before embarking on an EMBA journey. After that, I believe flexibility and self-discipline are also very key.
I made myself a schedule for each and every module, and tried my best to stick to it. Whenever my family or my company required me to shift from my fixed schedule, I adjusted and fulfilled their needs first, then replanned my time to complete my EMBA homework. I also tried to finish as much homework as possible during the modules.
What’s a standout memory from your time at HEC Paris?
There are many memories from my EMBA that are precious and unforgettable. But I think one of the moments I value most happened during the leadership course, when I shared my leadership experiences with my classmates and they shared theirs with me. These exchanges were very real and touched my heart.
How has the EMBA influenced your work today?
My specialization in Finance has helped me in my current role. Building new businesses sometimes has to be done though acquiring start-ups, and the finance knowledge and skills I gained help me to evaluate target companies and the potential synergies that may be generated through an acquisition.
In addition, the assessments done through the Leadership courses also help me a lot in understanding myself and how I work with others.
What advice would you share with someone thinking about pursuing an Executive MBA?
I think it is very important to communicate openly with your family and company before beginning an EMBA and to make good arrangements for your time. The program is demanding, but the other side of the coin is that you really learn a lot. Secondly, I would recommend exploring all the resources available at HEC Paris during your studies and making the most of them.
