The Executive MBA: a degree in which students with many years of of professional experience come back to school to learn and skillfully balance their careers, families, and ambitions.
For many leaders, pursuing this degree marks a turning point in their lives.
To understand what that choice looks like in real life, we spoke with ten HEC Paris EMBA alumni whose stories illuminate the HEC Paris EMBA experience from the inside out.
These professionals come from different industries, continents, and life stages. Some sought the confidence to pivot into new sectors; others wanted the strategic toolkit to scale companies, launch ventures, or lead with greater purpose.
WHY AN EMBA?
The decision to pursue an Executive MBA is a chance to recalibrate your career.
Take José Caceres Blundi, HEC Paris Class of 2024. For him, the EMBA represented a deliberate step toward reinvention. An entrepreneurial leader with more than 16 years of global experience in the energy and digital industrial sectors, José had already built a career defined by innovation, strategic partnerships, and translating R&D into commercial success. He decided to pursue his EMBA to relearn essentially skills.

“I also wanted to meet people like me who were also willing to go out of their comfort zone to do so,” he shares. The program offered both the intellectual challenge and the community of peers he was seeking.
Class of 2023 alumni and Assistant General Manager of Strategy at Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait Osama Ezzeldin says he decided to get his EMBA for both personal and professional reasons. He’s currently a banking executive, and he chose an EMBA to help bring his teams’ and organizations visions to life.
“Learning is an ongoing journey for me, and I wasn’t just interested in academia,” he shares. “I wanted to transform from being an executor to a leader who unlocks his team’s potential and leaves the same impact on them, as mentors have left on me,” says Ezzeldin.
Now the CEO of Mont Ouest, EMBA graduate François Carle from the EMBA Class of 2021 says the decision to pursue his EMBA came from a deep internal shift.
After years as an entrepreneur and strategic advisor in healthcare, he sensed that his corporate trajectory no longer aligned with his purpose.
“As I reached a mature stage in my corporate career, I realized that my path was no longer fully aligned with what truly inspired me. I needed a fresh perspective, renewed energy, and a transformative experience to reconnect with my purpose and potential,” he says.
The EMBA gave him the space to rethink his direction and reignite his sense of mission.
CHOOSING HEC PARIS
Choosing the right Executive MBA isn’t usually a simple decision with so many options to choose from.
After years as an entrepreneur and strategic advisor in healthcare, Carle was looking for a school that had both academic excellence with real‑world relevance, and HEC Paris fit the bill.
“Among the programs I explored, HEC Paris stood out for its comprehensive approach and the exceptional caliber of its faculty, accomplished professionals who bring real-world expertise into the classroom,” he says. “The reputation of HEC Paris and its global network also made it a natural choice.”
From last year’s graduating class of 2024, Salima Hibat‑Allah chose this specific EMBA program for reasons that are unique to her personal journey
As a physician‑turned‑strategist passionate about bridging medicine and business, she needed a program that could speak to both sides of her identity.
“I explored different programs, some more healthcare-oriented and others more general,” she says. “I had always heard about HEC’s global reputation, its strong healthcare-related alumni network, and the diversity of its cohort. The program structure and the specializations were also key factors that convinced me to choose HEC,” she continued.
BALANCING WORK, LIFE, AND ACADEMICS
Being an EMBA student often comes with continuous negotiation between competing priorities.
Hibat‑Allah says moving between work, family, and the program was a constant balancing act. “The workload was intense, but discipline, prioritization, and a supportive environment made it possible. I learned to manage time with precision and to focus on what truly creates value – both at work and at home,” she shares.
HEC Paris Class of 2023 EMBA alumni For Tony Phan is Head of Digital Transformation at MANE. As a strategic digital leader driving sustainable transformation, he is accustomed to complexity, yet the EMBA introduced a new level of intensity.
“It was a demanding period that required discipline, careful planning, and unwavering support from my family and colleagues,” he says. “I learned to prioritize ruthlessly and focus on what truly mattered.”

The experience also reshaped his leadership style. “I learned to delegate more effectively, empowering my teams and trusting them fully. What began as a necessity became one of my most important leadership lessons, that autonomy fuels both growth and performance,” he shares.
One of the defining strengths of the HEC Paris EMBA is the ability for participants to shape the program around their specific goals.
Phan says he chose the Digital Transformation specialization in San Francisco, in collaboration with Stanford and Berkeley universities in order to deepen his understanding of the innovation happening within Silicon Valley.
“I also participated in international mobility modules in Brazil and Saudi Arabia, gaining firsthand insight into emerging markets,” he says.
For Eurico Gonçalves Assunção from this year’s Class of 2025, customizing his EMBA experience was all about aligning the program with his entrepreneurial aspirations from the very beginning.
As Deputy Director at the European Welding Federation and Co‑Founder of 3D‑printing technologies company FAN3D, he’s passionate about empowering people, fostering innovation, and transforming new ideas into impact across manufacturing industries.
“I tailored my learning experience by focusing from day one on the ‘Test Your Startup’ specialization, which aligned perfectly with my objectives and did not disappoint,” says Assunção.
“To make the program even more personal, I used the different modules and essays to go deeper into my startup idea, applying each learning directly to my project. This approach allowed me to shape the EMBA around what mattered most to me: exploring and maturing my entrepreneurial vision,” he adds.
UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES
Many of the HEC Paris EMBA’s most impactful memories come from the moments that tested them, surprised them, and connected them to others.
Assunção says two moments rise above the rest for him. “I really enjoyed the weeks dedicated to the Test Your Startup specialization… the feedback we received, and the opportunity to immediately improve and do better, made it an intense but very rewarding experience,” he shares.
Furthermore, he adds, “I also have great memories of the Outdoor Leadership Seminar, where we were pushed outside our comfort zones through challenging team activities, rotating leadership roles, and receiving direct feedback. That combination of entrepreneurial focus and leadership development made a lasting impression and truly shaped my journey at HEC.”
For Kostya Artyukhov, HEC Paris Class of 2020 and Insights & FP&A Director at Tipico, his standout memory involved those in his cohort.
An empathetic, visionary strategy and finance leader, he found the culture of respect and collaboration to be one of the program’s defining strengths. He says the his cohort was made up of great quality people who, “Respected each other and shared knowledge with each other.”

He recalled one memory that was extremely special. “During one of the modules, I found myself at a lunch table with 10 French speaking people from my cohort, me being the only non-French speaking,” he says.
“The level of respect & inclusion was so high that shortly I realized that everyone at the table was speaking English as my classmates didn’t want me to feel excluded,” Artyukhov adds.
PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
EMBA students often say they learn so many lessons both personally and professionally from the moment they enter the program to the day they graduate.
Artyukhov recalled how the program strengthened his sense of self as much as his leadership skills.
“On a personal side, I would highlight getting a balanced self-confidence, built on foundations of high self-awareness. The program puts lots of focus on self-development,” he shares. “Professionally, the program taught me to be agile and open minded. Since graduation I’ve been able to change industry twice and join a couple of advisory boards.”
HEC Paris Class of 2024 and Procurement Director at Renault Ampère SAS Heng Li says the EMBA accelerated her professional trajectory almost immediately.
“During the program, I was promoted to a role with broader responsibilities, leading highly strategic and complex projects,” she shares. “I’ve learned how to balance long-term vision with urgent operational pressures… and lead through ambiguity with clarity, empathy, and calm.”
On a personal level, the transformation Li says what she learned was just as profound. “There is a clear ‘before’ and ‘after’ the EMBA journey… It gave me resilience not just as a skill, but as a mindset,” she says.
Beyond coursework, what stayed with her most were the relationships built along the way -“the late-night discussions, shared challenges, and lasting friendships.”
WORDS OF WISDOM FOR FUTURE EMBAS
Deciding whether to pursue an Executive MBA is as much an emotional choice as it is a strategic one, and the best advice often comes from those who’ve walked the path themselves.
Li says that for those considering pursuing an EMBA, they should ask themself not, “Am I ready?’” but instead, “What am I waiting for?”
“There’s rarely a perfect time to pause your routine, stretch yourself, and invest in your growth,” she says, “But if you feel that pull, that quiet desire for something more, listen to it. That’s your inner voice. Trust it.”
Speaking from experience, Li says that the journey will challenge and humble an EMBA student, but it will also reveal new strength and purpose.

“Be bold. Step into the unknown… you’ll discover a deeper version of yourself and become part of a diverse, inspiring community that will lift you up and stay with you for life. So, if you’re thinking about it – just go for it,” she offers.
Koen Collier, HEC Paris Class of 2023 EMBA graduate and HR & Organizational Development Lead at Plukon Food Group, says the value of an EMBA lies in its substance, not its status.
“Do an EMBA to work on yourself and to learn from others, not for the title. Organizations do not need titles; they need people who can take them from B to C, with respect for their legacy and the courage to challenge it when needed,” he advises.
Program Technical Manager at ACC and recent EMBA grad from the Class of 2025 Najib Laatiaoui says the key to success is full engagement.
“Get involved as much as possible. The journey may feel long at times, and the workload can be demanding, but time passes quickly,” he encourages.
As a final thought, he says, “Manage your assignments with discipline and remember to enjoy every step of the experience.”
