Impact isn’t always the easiest metric to measure, but The Case Centre has found a way. Citing popular demand and interest, the UK-based not-for-profit has released its first Impact Index based on the global reach and impact of case studies.
The Case Centre hosts the world’s largest collection of management case studies, articles, and books, provides training in case method teaching, runs case competitions and awards, and offers scholarships. It has a membership of more than 500 organizations. In the 2022-23 academic year, 1,187 organizations across 85 countries purchased cases from The Case Centre to use in their curriculum.
Now The Case Centre has inaugurated a new tool for a new era of graduate business education. “Case-producing schools often struggle to gauge the true impact of their case writing efforts,” says Professor Ruth Bender, chair of The Case Centre’s Board of Trustees. “The Board and I are pleased that The Case Centre Impact Index provides valuable insights into the often-unrecognized impact of this work.”
STRATEGIES FOR MEASURING IMPACT
The Index determines each school’s ranking by factoring in the number of a school’s cases adopted, measuring the breadth of adoption across other organizations and other countries, and tallying the number of individual students taught with the cases.
The Case Centre considered all schools for the Impact Index rankings that have published at least one case with them this past academic year — September 1, 2022, through August 31, 2023. It then ranked the top 50 from 439 eligible schools.
“As the independent home of the case method, we have, for many years, been asked which schools have the most impact with their case writing,” Case Centre CEO Vicky Lester says. “After extensive and meticulous efforts, I am thrilled to unveil our inaugural Impact Index. This marks a significant addition to our recognition portfolio, playing a pivotal role in our mission to support and advance the case method worldwide.”
