GRANT RANKING
How do you know a business school has credibility? It has organizations and individuals lining up to sponsor its research. That’s a third way that The Financial Times assesses a program’s research capabilities. Using data collected by Digital Science, The Financial Times examined both Total Grant Funding (70% Weight) and Number of Funding Organizations (30% Weight), while also publishing data on Average Citations Per Grant.
Like Policy, Wharton claimed the top spot in Grants, raking in an impressive $51.2-million over the past three years. This eclipses totals generated by the University of St. Gallen ($36.4-million) and Warwick Business School ($27.7-million). All the same, there were three additional business schools that collected $20-million or more for research over the past three years: University of Zurich, Copenhagen Business School, and Emory University’s Goizueta Business School. The Wharton School also attracted more sponsors than any business school with 22, edging out Copenhagen Business School (21).
That’s not to say the highest-drawing business schools produced the biggest return on investment. On average, the Wharton School yields 36.6 citations per grant – higher than any other program in the Top 5 for grants. However, this number is lower than both the London Business School (46.9) and INSEAD (41.3). Many times, it is the lower-ranked programs that deliver the biggest bang for the buck in research. Take the United Kingdom’s Ashton Business School, which turned 4 grants worth $2.2-million into 296.3 citations per grant. The numbers are similar at France’s NEOMA Business School, where 5 grants totaling to $2.1-million generated 223 citations per grant.

TEACHING CASES
How do you know a business school’s faculty write great cases? Their competitors buy them. That’s the ‘case’ with Harvard Business School, which ranked #1 in “faculties’ production of case studies for classroom use.” According to The Financial Times, the ranking is derived from “authors producing the most popular teaching cases over the past year written in the past seven year(s).” In this ranking, international MBA programs enjoy a decided edge.
That starts with Canada’s Ivey Business School, which placed 2nd. IESE Business School, which was developed by Harvard Business School faculty in the 1960s, finished 7th. CEIBS, a Chinese institution centered in Shanghai, made it to 4th – just a spot behind the University of Virginia’s Darden, a program known for teaching excellence and case study mastery. As a whole, just six American programs are represented in the Teaching Cases ranking – two fewer than their Asian counterparts.
