TOP UNIVERSITIES FOR BUSINESS LEADERS
Capital on Tap, a UK-based fintech company that has provided credit and spending tools for small businesses since 2012, analyzed LinkedIn alumni data across major UK institutions, focusing on alumni with leadership titles including CEO, Founder, and Managing Director; freelancers were identified by searching for “Freelance” in job titles. Alumni totals were drawn from each university’s LinkedIn “Alumni” section, covering all graduates from 1900 to the present.
The data was collected in July 2025. The results show that business leadership has emerged as a defining career path of the decade, with an estimated 5.5 million private sector businesses now operating across the UK.
Rounding out the top 10 universities producing business leaders are the University of Bristol in sixth place, followed by the University of Edinburgh, University of Manchester, University College London, and the University of Durham.
UNIVERSITIES PRODUCING FREELANCERS
Regarding the alumni who list “Freelance” in their job titles: Creative-focused universities dominate this category, with Westminster topping the list, where 5.28% of alumni — more than 8,500 graduates — are freelancers.
Sussex ranks second, with 4.70% of alumni freelancing, while Manchester Metropolitan University is third, with 4.13%. Other top institutions for freelancers include the University of East Anglia, Edinburgh, Leeds, Lincoln, Bristol, Cambridge, and St Andrews.
“Our research shows that universities can act as pipelines for entrepreneurial talent,” says Alex Miles, COO of Capital on Tap. “Whether graduates go on to become CEOs, freelancers, or startup founders, the common thread is confidence, resilience, and the ability to take risks.”
Miles adds that while a degree is not essential for success, universities provide students with valuable skills, networks, and financial know-how.
“By getting involved early in enterprise hubs or pitch competitions, building connections with mentors and peers, experimenting with ideas, and developing financial literacy, students can gain more than just a qualification,” he says. “They graduate with the mindset to turn ambition into action.”
