Yale School of Management is adding a fourth study option to its MBA for Executives program, offering a broad leadership track to students entering in 2024, the school announced this week.

Yale SOM traditionally offered its EMBAs three specialized focus areas: asset management, healthcare, and sustainability. The new leadership option will offer students more flexibility.

Further, the Class of 2026 will be able to choose electives and attend academic conferences and seminars outside of their own focus areas.

“This evolution in the MBA for Executives program will continue to build on what is special and unique in the program while enabling us to reach more people who will benefit from exposure to Yale’s mission-driven model of leadership and from deeper understanding of major issues confronting business and society,” says Wendy Tsung, the assistant dean of the EMBA program, in a school news release.

MORE CHOICE FOR YALE EMBAs

The addition of the general management option is a true addition. Yale SOM will continue to offer the tree specialized tracks.

Yale SOM launched its EMBA in 2005 with a focus on healthcare. It expanded the program in 2014 to include asset management and sustainability. Students in each focus area take specialized courses and attend related seminars and conferences alongside their focus area classmates. Previously, they weren’t able to explore courses or seminars outside their tracks, according to the confines of the program.

The Class of 2026, however, will be able to take electives and participate in activities from any of the focus areas. To specialize, students will take at least four elective courses and attend five colloquium sessions in a particular focus area. While the program was previously restricted to students with professional experience within one of the areas of focus, it will now be open to a broader pool of applicants.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Yale’s 22-month EMBA is an in-person program with classes every Friday and Saturday. It was The Financial Times‘ top-ranked U.S. program in 2022 and ranked fifth in Poets&Quants’ 2022 composite EMBA ranking of U.S. programs. Cost for students entering July 2023 is $208,500.

In the first year, Yale EMBA students complete the integrated core curriculum organized around stakeholder perspectives rather than functional disciplines. The program includes four in-residence weeks, including a Global Network Week abroad. Students choose electives in their chosen focus areas in the second year.

“We’ve built up an amazing network of leaders committed to improving healthcare systems and organizations over the years,” says Howard Forman, faculty director for the healthcare area of focus. “The same has happened in asset management and sustainability. We achieved this by leveraging the unique talents and expertise in these areas from across Yale University.

“We expect that we will continue to attract students interested in these critical areas for business and society, while allowing greater flexibility in course selection and offering general management applicants an opportunity to benefit from the Yale MBA in an executive-friendly format.”
