7. How Wharton Creates ‘Leaders That Have A Positive Impact On The World’: Q&A With New Vice Dean Nicolaj Siggelkow
Nicolaj Siggelkow grew up in Germany, but left after high school to study economics at Stanford University. Paul Milgrom, who won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2020, was his honors thesis advisor. Siggelkow also earned an MA in economics and PhD in business economics at Harvard, where his thesis advisor was another famous economist – Michael Porter. He joined the Wharton faculty in 1998.
Siggelkow, an economist, has taught at Wharton for nearly 25 years. Effective July 1, he began a new role in the storied business school: Vice dean of the Wharton MBA programs.
“The exciting part of being in this job right now is there is a realization that the biggest problems that society is facing will not be solved without businesses getting involved. Businesses have to be part of the solution, otherwise, we’re not going to get where we need to be – be it environmental, equity and inclusion, or otherwise,” Siggelkow says.
“Wharton takes that really seriously and is making it part of our mission: To really create leaders that have a positive impact on the world. Dean (Erika) James is putting money, effort, and resources behind that. To me, that is exciting.”
We got to sit down with Siggelkow this fall at his office in Jon M. Huntsman Hall. We talked about his goals for this new role, pressures on the MBA degree, and classroom innovations coming out of the pandemic. Read our wide-ranging conversation here.

9. The Best & Brightest Executive MBAs Of 2022
One of our most popular features every year, and on any of our sites, is our collection of Best & Brightest students at each of the top business schools.
This year, we feature 100 Executive MBAs from the Class of 2022, chosen by their schools for personifying excellence, whether it be in academic performance, extracurricular involvement, or professional achievement.
“I admire my friends from the EMBA Class of 2022,” assets Seo Yeon Yoon, a biomedical researcher who earned her MBA at U.C.-Berkeley’s Haas School. “We started our journey together on Zoom, not knowing when we could meet in-person and study together in a physical classroom on-campus. During those days, we wasted no time in building relationships and maximizing our time together – at times, being on calls for hours on end. Many of us have been through hell and back – losing family and friends (in US and abroad), falling ill (physical or mental), being laid off from our jobs – just to name a few. Through it all, we supported one another, committing ourselves to stand strong and being the friend in need so that no one was left alone. The story of the Class of 2022 is the legacy of the Haas EMBA program, and I admire my fellow classmates for unfailingly living up to the values that unite us, namely, resilience and love.”

And, in 2022, Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University returned to a familiar place in our list: The very top.
Kellogg shot up to No. 1 after finishing 13th in P&Q‘s composite ranking of 2021 — a year in which several top schools fell sharply after choosing not to participate in one or more of the premier rankings.
