Michigan Ross Expands Los Angeles Footprint With New Downtown Campus

New 20,000-square-foot Los Angeles campus at The Grand LA expands the B-school’s West Coast presence for EMBA, executive education, alumni, and corporate programming.

University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business has been teaching Executive MBA students in Los Angeles for nearly 15 years. Now it has a West Coast campus to match its ambitions.

Ross has opened a new 20,000-square-foot campus in downtown Los Angeles, giving the school a permanent home for its Executive MBA, executive education, alumni programming, and other events. It also provides more room to expand its presence in Southern California.

The new Michigan Ross Los Angeles campus is located at The Grand LA, the Frank Gehry-designed development at First and Grand avenues, directly across from Walt Disney Concert Hall. It includes classrooms, study rooms, collaborative workspaces, indoor and outdoor event areas, and flexible space that can be converted for conferences and other large gatherings.

Ross officially marked the opening with a ribbon cutting September 3.

“Few cities match the energy and global reach of Los Angeles,” Sharon F. Matusik, the Edward J. Frey Dean of Business at Michigan Ross, said in announcing the opening. “This campus brings the Michigan Ross spirit to a city that shares our drive to innovate and make an impact.”

FROM AN EMBA OUTPOST TO A WEST COAST CAMPUS

Ross first launched a Los Angeles cohort of its Executive MBA in 2012, giving experienced executives on the West Coast access to the Ross degree without requiring them to relocate to Ann Arbor.

The new campus represents a significant expansion of that footprint, giving the school a physical hub in a state where the University of Michigan already has an alumni base of more than 54,000.

It also positions the business school inside one of the largest and most diverse business markets in the country, with deep concentrations in entertainment and media but also technology, finance, real estate, entrepreneurship, and other industries.

The Grand LA is a mixed-use development along downtown’s Grand Avenue Arts Corridor developed by Related Companies and designed by architect Frank Gehry. The development sits across the street from Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall — what The Grand calls the only place where two of the architect’s major designs face one another.

The broader development includes 164,000 square feet of retail, restaurants and shopping spread across three levels of landscaped terraces, along with residences and the 28-story, 305-room Conrad Los Angeles hotel.

For Ross, the location places students and executives near downtown Los Angeles’ business district as well as some of the city’s most recognizable cultural institutions.

The school describes the campus as a place to “learn, lead, connect,” part classroom, part executive education center, and part West Coast clubhouse for the Ross and wider Michigan communities.
