Which academic or extracurricular achievement are you most proud of during business school? Getting my son off to college and maintaining my leadership roles

What achievement are you most proud of in your professional career? It has been an honor and privilege to serve as UPMC Shadyside Chief of Surgical Services

Who was your favorite MBA professor? Pamela Peele and Sara Moeller are both dynamic, engaging, articulate, and talented educators whose expertise is ideal for teaching our diverse MBA group. Both are incredibly knowledgeable and down to earth individuals. They surpassed my expectations and made every class enjoyable.

Why did you choose this school’s executive MBA program? At the University of Pittsburgh Katz School of Business, the EMBA provides you the core business fundamentals needed with strategic application in the healthcare industry. The professors are outstanding and course design well established. Past graduates spoke very highly about the benefits of the EMBA program.

What is the biggest lesson you gained during your MBA and how did you apply it at work? Participating in the Executive MBA Program has broadly expanded my knowledge of healthcare management, departmental finances, health insurance, capital budgeting, and administration and leadership.

Give us a story during your time as an executive MBA on how you were able to juggle work, family and education? It’s not about better time management, it’s about better self-management. Participating in the program taught me to be more efficient and effective with my time.

What advice would you give to a student looking to enter an executive MBA program? Your future is created by what you do today, not tomorrow.

What is the biggest myth about going back to school? It was a very enjoyable experience, and the outstanding Katz staff streamlined the process

What was your biggest regret in business school? Not doing it sooner!

Which MBA classmate do you most admire? Alanna Peterson, MD is a talented physician, the Chief of Emergency Medicine at UPMC SHY, a full-time mom and thoughtful classmate who enjoys life. She regularly puts herself second to make others happy including friends, family, colleagues, and patients.

What was the main reason you chose an executive MBA program over part-time or online alternatives? The most important factors for me in choosing the Katz EMBA program were program rigor and reputation, comprehensive core classes, opportunity for electives, program format and accommodating class schedule.

What is your ultimate long-term professional goal? If you have not found it yet, keep looking. Do not call it a dream, call it a plan for the future.

What made Michael such an invaluable addition to the class of 2022?

“It is with great pleasure that I write to nominate Michael Singh for the Poet&Quants Best and Brightest Executive MBA award. Michael matriculated into the Katz School’s Executive MBA in Healthcare program in May 2021 and will graduate in December 2022. He has been an outstanding contributor to the program and is considered by faculty to be one of the most talented students we have had in this program, or any other MBA program we offer.

Dr. Singh is a highly accomplished professional. He holds an M.D. from SUNY-Buffalo School of Medicine and a BA in Biology from the University of Rochester. He is board certified in both General Surgery and Vascular Surgery, and currently holds appointments in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he is a Professor of Surgery, and at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), where he serves as Chief of Surgical Services at UPMC Shadyside, responsible for all operations of the surgical services at the hospital. He also serves as Associate Program Director of the Vascular Surgery Residency program, and co-Director of the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute Aortic Center. In these capacities, Dr. Singh has mentored over 60 Vascular Surgery Residents and Fellows, and successfully instituted programs focused on enhancing patient care and quality outcomes. At the same time, he has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles in academic journals, along with over 60 abstracts, book chapters, and other publications.  Dr. Singh is also a Distinguished Fellow in the Society for Vascular Surgery and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons.

Despite his extensive professional responsibilities and accomplishments, Dr. Singh has earned a GPA of 3.75 in the Executive MBA in Healthcare program. And he not only performs highly at an individual level, but he also creates a positive learning environment for his fellow classmates.  The EMBA-Healthcare program is based on a strong cohort model and Dr. Singh is considered a leader in the class. On a personal level, Dr. Singh is approachable, constructive, and a team player. He has a strong but unassuming leadership style that welcomes the contributions of others.

Dr. Singh exemplifies all the qualities any EMBA program would desire in a student. He is highly accomplished professionally, driven to make a difference, and has been a very positive contributor to his profession and his EMBA cohort.
