LMU’s College of Business Administration is overhauling the structure of its Executive MBA offering for the class that enters in the fall of 2012. From then on, the school begins holding all class sessions on Saturdays, allowing students to minimize time away from work.

“This move should appeal to Executive MBA candidates, as companies increasingly prefer that their middle managers pursue academic programs outside of the work week,” explains Bill Lindsey, director of LMU’s Executive MBA.

The change nicely differentiates this highly creative EMBA program in the L.A. market. Students begin the program with a residential retreat at which execs set learning goals, form study teams and engage in a variety of workshops and team-building exercises. Students also participate in a workshop with their spouse or significant other about the importance of achieving balance between family, work and school. Then, In the Summer Session between the first and second year, the class takes a Business Research course which includes a one-week domestic field trip.

That’s not all. There’s a latter field consulting project with small businesses, and finally a ten-day international trip to one or more major, non-US business centers. In recent years, EMBA classes have traveled to China, India, South America, Southeast Asia, and Europe.

All of these experiences are on top of a program that is known for a good amount of hand-holding. Students, for example, are given a workbook at the beginning of the module that contains all assignments, due dates, learning objectives and estimated time to complete each assignment. Faculty are available to answer questions and to help where needed. “Care for the person” is a hallmark of the College and Jesuit education. In some cases, faculty will even hold study sessions before a big assignment is due. After acceptance, participants receive access to MBA Primer, a self-paced web-based refresher course on accounting, finance and statistics. And students are assigned an Executive Coach, who serve as your mentor and help you develop your own professional growth plan.

Built on Loyola Marymount’s Jesuit traditions, the executive version of the MBA program is designed to produce principled leaders who are well-grounded in ethics, business principles and the managerial competencies needed to successfully lead 21st century organizations. The program consists of four integrated modules plus a summer session, and includes an initial leadership retreat, a one-week domestic trip and a 10-day international trip. Students are senior managers from a wide range of industries and not-for-profit organizations.

Executive MBA classes meet most Saturdays, except holiday weekends, with breaks between the modules (semesters), so students can better fit a rigorous academic program into their busy work schedules.
