New Four Continent Master’s Program

Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business in Washington, D.C., ESADE Business School in Spain, and Brazilian business school EBAPE/Fundação Getulio Vargas said today (May 31) they are developing a Corporate International Master’s (CIM) degree program with plans to begin in spring 2013.

The one-year program will be taught in three 11-day sessions in Washington, D.C., Rio de Janeiro, and Madrid; one five-day session in Shanghai; and online classes between the four destinations. The program, which will award three degrees – one from each school, seeks experienced professionals and executives interested in a world-class business education with a strong international perspective, while maintaining their personal and professional schedules. In addition, the CIM program will help prepare those who are interested in expanding their activities internationally and in understanding successful business practices within the United States, Europe, Latin America, and China.

“As a global leader, you must have the ability to inspire by articulating an exciting vision of the future. However, an inspiring vision is not enough. You also must have the ability to influence others to work together to realize that vision,” said Paul Almeida, senior associate dean of executive education at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, in a statement. “Through our curriculum, executives in our Corporate International Master’s program will develop the skills they need to become global leaders.”

“An exciting part of this program is that all CIM students will participate in leadership development through courses – as well as personal executive coaching – to develop an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses,” added Jaume Hugas, executive director for executive education at ESADE Business School, in a statement. “They will learn techniques to motivate their team and deliver on the expectations of their global clients.”

Combining each school’s strengths, the CIM program aims to equip executives with fundamental business and general management skills. All elements of the program have been integrated to give participants the concepts and capabilities they need to be successful in the international economy. Core areas of focus include interpersonal dynamics, cross-cultural communication and negotiation, contextual awareness, managerial mobility, sensitivity to emerging business paradigms, technological and managerial innovation, decision making in times of uncertainty, and values-based leadership.

“Senior managers are increasingly confronted with the complexity of contemporary business issues. Not only are companies operating in different national environments, but they also need to cope with discontinuous changes. The new business landscape will require new managerial mindsets,” said Alvaro Cyrino, deputy dean of EBAPE/FGV, in a statement. “The CIM program is specially designed to address the current challenges facing managers in today´s competitive environment.”

Other benefits of the program include moderated peer-to-peer discussions about current issues and best practices, guest lectures by business leaders, site visits to interact with local business leaders, and cultural immersion into the business communities and history of the cities where modules are held. Participants also will prepare a master’s thesis about a subject related to their work expertise and the program’s content.

The CIM program is the third partnership program between Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business and ESADE. The others are the Global Executive MBA, which also includes Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service, and the Global Advanced Management Program.
