Boston University boasts the highest ranked Executive MBA program in both Boston and New England. It’s also one of the smallest and most intimate of the quality experiences for executives with just 34 students in the latest entering class. The latest cohort is an impressive group of mid-to-senior managers with 10+ years of professional experience. Some 24% already have advanced degrees, and the average base salary of the group is a whopping $175,487.

The program focuses on management as a system, a cross-functional understanding of the interdependencies among organizations’ components. It also offers a global component through a concentrated international module and trip designed to provide an understanding of the factors that frame the business context in developed and developing economies.

The program begins in January and concludes in late June of the following year, and encompasses four integrated components: five modules occurring on Fridays and Saturdays every other week for 18 months; case discussions, a team-based assignment in each module; four week-long residential sessions including one international session; and a capstone project involving the creation of an integrated business plan during the final module.

Application Deadline: June 15, August 15, October 15 (final deadline)

2012 Poets&Quants: 36

2010 The Wall Street Journal: 20
2011 Financial Times: NR

Rankings Analysis: Boston University’s Executive MBA program fell 20 places to finish 36th in the 2012 PoetsandQuants’ analysis. But the fall had nothing to do with the quality of this exceptional program or any decline in its other rankings. The reason: P&Q’s new list is global and replaces one that was confined to North America in 2011. So a number of the best schools outside the U.S., including London Business School, jumped ahead of Boston.

BusinessWeek, which ranks EMBA programs on the basis of graduate satisfaction and a reputation poll among EMBA directors, maintained its second-tier ranking for Boston’s program in 2011. The Wall Street Journal had awarded the program an impressive rank of 20th in 2010. This is the highest ranked EMBA program in Boston as well as New England. A new MIT EMBA, which enrolled its first class of students in October of 2010, has yet to be ranked by any major ranking organization.
